Your Jane Sterling Silver and Gold Vermeil (the French phenomenon pronounced ‘ver-may’) jewelry, like all jewelry composed of these precious metals, by nature, is delicate and requires care and attention to avoid tarnishing and damage. Please follow these daily considerations to ensure their longevity:
How to wear
Keep your Jane jewelry dry and be sure to handle with care. Take your regular activities into consideration when wearing your jewelry, including potential for impact, delicate chains getting caught on external objects, and ensuring to avoid inadvertent pressure on delicate chains. Keep your jewelry away from intense sources of heat and extreme temperature changes. After each wear, proactive maintenance is key: to keep tarnish from setting in, use a soft, dry cloth to lightly buff the surface and clear away any oils or buildup to preserve its shine.
What to avoid
Take off your jewelry before household/ outdoor chores, handwashing, exercising, cooking, cleaning, showering, and swimming. Harsh chemicals like chlorine or cleaning products can damage your jewelry. Apply lotions, creams, perfumes, sprays and any other chemicals/cleaning agents before putting on your jewelry. Wait five minutes after applying lotions, creams, perfumes, and sprays to put on your jewelry to ensure they set in on your skin and not your jewelry.
How to store
Pieces of jewelry become scratched when they come into contact with one another. When you're not wearing your jewelry, place it in the included Jane pouch or jewelry box to protect it from scratches, tarnishing, and exposure to the elements. Chains should be closed and laid flat to avoid the formation of knots. If you won’t be wearing it for a while, keep it in an airtight bag. For the best preservation, store your piece somewhere cool and dry, away from harsh temperatures or direct sunlight, such as a drawer or closet.
How to clean
Your jewelry should be maintained. Cleaning your pieces helps to avoid the residue buildup that can dull the original shine. When cleaning your jewelry, gently use a solution of mild dish soap and water. Do not leave pieces soaking for too long and do not apply pressure as you wipe/polish them, as this may dull the surface. Steer clear of strong liquid or dip-style cleaners—they can strip or harm the finish. Avoid using a brush or coarse fabrics as this can potentially scratch the surface. If you’re unsure about a product, feel free to reach out to the Concierge before using it. For light tarnish on sterling silver, a polishing cloth works best. Ensure pieces are completely dry before storing.
Because polishing/cleaning removes a bit of the metal surface each time, items should only be polished a few times in the lifetime of a piece. The process clears tarnish and brings back the shine, but overusing it can wear the piece down.
